At Wisedocs, we are building a stellar team and we are proud to introduce our team members over time through our monthly Wisedocs’ Brain Power series. Recently, we introduced you to Henry Dowd, our Technical Product Manager. Today, we will meet Sonya Stang, our Medical Documentation Training Specialist and a valuable member of the Wisedocs team. Sonya has extensive medical experience as a medical scribe and her medical expertise plays a vital role in training our medical documentation team. Sonya describes her role at Wisedocs, what it takes to manage a team, and her experience working in a hybrid environment.

Tell us about yourself and your career so far. How did you get to where you are today?

“I am on a mission to make learning as fun as it is informative, ensuring our teams are armed with the skills to create accurate and reliable medical documentation. I am also passionate about quality and love using our cutting-edge technology to ensure the highest standards in documentation.”

How did you find Wisedocs and end up in the tech and startup world?

“I discovered Wisedocs on LinkedIn of all places! I did my research and found that Wisedocs really aligned with my goals. Everyone seemed so passionate about their job, and I was ready for a change, so I applied and haven’t looked back. This company is truly an incredible place to work.”

At Wisedocs, we aim to foster a collaborative and supportive environment for our team. We were thrilled to announce that we have been certified as a Great Place to Work® for a third consecutive year after a thorough, independent analysis conducted by Great Place to Work Institute® Canada. We pride ourselves on our welcoming workplace and culture, and we are glad to share in this recognition with our inspiring team.

What makes you excited about Wisedocs? What are the challenges?

“Working at Wisedocs is exciting because, at a startup, things are always changing. It keeps things new and fresh, but that can also be challenging for some. Our team is filled with passionate and intellectual individuals that make us all want to strive to make continual improvements. It’s fun to be able to help others achieve their goal of working in a healthcare space.”

Can you describe your role as a Medical Documentation Training Specialist at Wisedocs? What are your primary responsibilities and areas of focus?

“In my role, I oversee the development and implementation of training programs, monitor quality assurance processes, and work closely with our teams to enhance their skills and capabilities. My end goal is to deliver incredible training that helps navigate the quality waters, ensuring excellence across the board.”

What is it like managing a team? What is one suggestion you would make to those looking to effectively train and manage a team?

“Managing a team is both a challenging and rewarding experience. It involves balancing the needs and strengths of individual team members with the organization's overall goals. It requires clear communication, empathy, and the ability to inspire and motivate others. It’s about fostering a collaborative environment where everyone feels valued and empowered to do their best.

One suggestion for those looking to effectively train and manage a team is to prioritize continuous learning and development. Creating a culture of ongoing education by providing regular training opportunities, providing encouraging feedback, and supporting professional development.”

Builiding trust with employees goes beyond creating a collaborative team, but also encouraging team members to further their careers by obtaining new knowledge and skills to improve their existing skill sets. It was found that 60% of employees move on when there is a lack of development and growth opportunities in an organization. Mckinsey reported that learning and development opportunities had a major impact in retaining employee engagement by improving their sense of well-being, lowering anxiety, and increasing confidence in the workplace. In light of these sentiments, Wisedocs prioritizes career growth, support, and everything our employees need to succeed and feel fulfilled in their careers.

What part of the Wisedocs product are you most proud to have worked on, to date?

“It’s so hard to choose one thing. I really love collaborating with other teams on products. What consistently makes me burst with pride is the infectious enthusiasm and brilliance of our teams.

Our organization takes pride in the collaborative and inspiring team we have built. At Wisedocs, we deeply value our employees and their constant drive and dedication to transforming the claims process. We love to highlight the people behind our mission such as Eric Pham, Operations Supervisor, and Karishma Shah, Account Executive, in our monthly blog series Brain Power.

What has been your experience working within a hybrid team spanning across Canada and the United States?

“It has been an enriching experience and has allowed me to collaborate with diverse perspectives and leverage the unique strengths of team members from different regions. The key to our success has been effective communication and flexibility, ensuring everyone stays connected and aligned despite geographical distances. Embracing time zones and utilizing tech for seamless collaboration is crucial.”

What’s an unexpected perk or challenge (or both) of being a Medical Documentation Training Specialist?

“A profound sense of satisfaction from knowing that my work directly contributes to improving the efficiency of processing claims. I love playing a crucial role in supporting IME and medicolegal companies and enhancing patient outcomes.

On the flip side, an unexpected challenge is staying updated with constantly evolving medical documentation standards and technologies. It requires continuous learning and adaptability to ensure that training programs remain relevant and effective in an ever-changing field.”

At Wisedocs, we are always looking for talented individuals like Sonya to join our growing team and make a difference in the claims ecosystem. Explore our open roles and join our dynamic team today.
