At Wisedocs, we’re building a stellar team and we’re proud to introduce our team members across various departments through our Wisedocs’ Brain Power series. Recently, we introduced Arlo Godel, Implementation Specialist. Today we will meet Amin Bavand, one of our Software Developers at Wisedocs. As a Software Developer, Amin plays a vital role in creating and implementing updates and new launches to our platform for our clients. As Amin explains his role at Wisedocs, he’ll provide insight into exciting projects he’s worked on and what it takes to be part of the Wisedocs team.

Tell us about your career so far. How did you get to where you are today?

“I began my career around 3.5 years ago after earning my MSc degree from the University of Alberta. I started as a backend software engineer at a startup, which gave me hands-on experience and exposure to a wide range of technologies and challenges early on. Since then, I’ve continued to build my skills and grow within the field of software development. Each role has offered new learning opportunities, and my passion for solving complex problems has kept me motivated throughout my journey. That drive, along with continuous learning and collaboration, has led me to where I am today.”

At Wisedocs, we’re passionate about celebrating our hardworking employees. In fact, we recently hosted our very first PHIT Awards, where we recognize employees who embody our core values of Purpose-Driven, Honesty, Intelligence, and Tenacity. We believe that each of our employees at Wisedocs harness these attributes to achieve success in their role and be a valuable part of our team.

How did you end up in the tech and startup world, ultimately finding Wisedocs?

“My passion for math and programming naturally steered me toward the tech industry. I love solving problems and creating solutions through code, so the dynamic world of startups felt like a perfect fit. I discovered Wisedocs during a job search after my previous company had to shut down. Wisedocs’ vision and the opportunity to contribute to innovative projects immediately resonated with me, and I knew it was the right place for me to continue growing as a developer.”

What makes you excited about Wisedocs? What are the challenges?

“One of the things that excites me most about Wisedocs is being part of a passionate, talented team of developers who are not only fun to work with but incredibly supportive. The culture of collaboration here is amazing - everyone is always ready to help and share knowledge, which makes the work environment both engaging and motivating.

Of course, there are challenges. We occasionally encounter urgent production issues that need immediate attention, which can be stressful at times. However, the strong sense of teamwork and shared responsibility at Wisedocs makes these moments manageable. Knowing you’re not alone in tackling problems really makes a difference.”

Give us a day in the life of an Implementation Specialist: what’s your 9-5?

“My day typically starts with a daily standup, where the team syncs up on progress and any blockers. Depending on the day, there might be additional meetings, like design discussions or planning sessions for upcoming features. The bulk of my time is spent either developing new features or refining existing ones to ensure our clients have a seamless experience. Collaboration is key, so a lot of time goes into discussing design decisions and ensuring we're on the right track. Occasionally, I’ll step in to handle support issues, addressing bugs or problems that customers are facing. It's a good balance of building new things and making sure everything runs smoothly for our users.”

What’s an unexpected perk or challenge (or both) of being a Software Developer?

“One unexpected challenge of being a software developer is the need for constant attention to detail and the ability to juggle multiple things at once. You’re not just writing code - you’re thinking about how it will scale, how it interacts with other systems, and what potential issues could arise. It requires a lot of vigilance and the ability to think outside the box.

On the perk side, the problem-solving aspect is incredibly rewarding. Finding solutions to complex issues and seeing the direct impact of your work on a product or system can be very fulfilling. Plus, there’s always something new to learn, which keeps the job exciting and fresh.”

What part of the Wisedocs product are you most proud to have worked on, to date?

“When I joined Wisedocs, I had the exciting opportunity to work on a project called ‘deduplication'. The goal of this project was to identify and remove duplicate pages across documents, which helps save time and reduce costs by avoiding the processing of redundant documents. I was responsible for improving the existing duplicate detection process by developing new algorithms that addressed the limitations of the previous version.

I began by analyzing the most common scenarios where our earlier system struggled to detect duplicates effectively. After researching various algorithms, I evaluated their strengths and weaknesses, testing them against our customers' data. Ultimately, I implemented an ensemble-based approach that combined several algorithms, which significantly improved both the accuracy and speed of duplicate detection.

The result was a solution that met the needs of our product team and, more importantly, delivered real value to our customers. I’m incredibly proud to have contributed to such a meaningful project within my first few months at Wisedocs, and to have played a part in enhancing the success of our customers.”

Did you know that as much as 30% of every case can be duplicate documents? This results in high billing and labor costs for any IME firm. Wisedocs’ deduplication feature automatically identifies and organizes duplicate files in a user-friendly manner for users to easily navigate and review at their convenience.

What advice would you give to someone just starting out in software development?

“Don’t hesitate to ask questions - there’s no such thing as a stupid question. Asking the right questions to the right people can save you hours of frustration and help you learn much faster. Stay curious, seek guidance when you need it, and remember that learning from others is a key part of growing as a developer.”

What are you most excited about in the future of technology and development?

“I'm particularly excited about the potential of Large Language Models (LLMs). Having used tools like ChatGPT in the past, I've found that they significantly enhance my abilities and learning as a software developer. These AI-driven models streamline problem-solving, accelerate coding, and open up new possibilities for learning and creativity.”

At Wisedocs, we are always looking for talented individuals like Amin to join our growing team and make a positive impact on the claims ecosystem. Visit our careers page and explore our open roles!
