At Wisedocs, our strength lies in the collective expertise and dedication of our team members. Recently, we introduced you to Lisen Kaci, our Engineering Lead. Today, we're offering an in-depth look into the professional journey of one of our Software Engineers, Jonathan Enders. His invaluable contributions have been instrumental in shaping our innovative Summary Platform, which summarizes medical records for claims. In this interview with Jonathan, we explore the unique insights and experiences of a software engineer at Wisedocs.

May you please tell us a bit about yourself?

Jonathan: With a Master's Degree in Physics from Goethe University Frankfurt, I've dedicated two decades to the realm of software development. My professional journey has taken me across borders, from Germany to Ireland, Singapore, and Canada. Throughout these years, I've collaborated with a diverse range of companies, organizations, and individuals. My expertise spans a wide array of topics, including telecommunication stacks, backend and microservices, physics simulations, as well as machine learning.

Tell us about your career so far: How did you get to where you are today?

Jonathan: Embarking on this journey as a self-taught programmer, I navigated through the intricate maze of software programming, confronting challenges head-on and learning from firsthand experiences. This hands-on approach has equipped me with a versatile skill set, empowering me to address a myriad of problems with persistence and time. This adaptability is mirrored in the diverse roles and challenges I've undertaken throughout my career.

What’s the day-to-day of Wisedocs' Software Engineer?

Jonathan: My day is predominantly computer-centric, diligently addressing tasks, or “tickets,” on my Jira board. However, the dynamic nature of our work means I often pivot to other items, as well, be it exciting feature enhancements or handling tasks awaiting automation. The startup environment at Wisedocs uniquely positions me to harness the full spectrum of my skills and dive into different projects, as needed.

What makes you excited about Wisedocs? What are the challenges?

Jonathan: While startups inherently come with their share of risks, being part of Wisedocs places me closer to the market's pulse than I have ever experienced in a larger corporation. Our venture into the insurance domain is particularly exhilarating, given the insurance industry's automation inefficiencies — a realm ripe for innovation that all aspects of the industry are keen to adopt. Working in an industry looking to implement new technology also means navigating the undercurrents of market pressures and making sure we are moving fast.

You recently worked on our Summary Platform; tell us about your experience developing a new product.

Jonathan: My collaboration with our Engineering Lead, Lisen Kaci, as well as the entire engineering team, was pivotal in accomplishing such a huge goal for Wisedocs and the product. The journey of crafting the backend service was multifaceted, encompassing PDF generation, intricate cloud infrastructure setups, recursive data structures, and machine learning. Being able to bridge and connect all these aspects of programming to build something entirely new was a great experience.

What’s an unexpected perk or challenge (or both) about being a Software Engineer?

Jonathan: Throughout my journey in software engineering, I've been privileged to work in diverse environments. One distinct advantage of this profession is the exposure to various cultural and technical landscapes. This has not only enriched my technical expertise but also provided invaluable insights into global work dynamics.

However, the field of software engineering is not without its challenges. The rapid pace of technological advancements means that continuous learning is imperative. During my tenure at Wisedocs, for instance, adapting to shifting market dynamics and staying abreast of competitors was both invigorating and demanding. This underscores the constantly changing landscape of the profession.

I can confidently state that this field offers a unique blend of opportunities and challenges that are both rewarding and growth-inducing.

Tell us more about the Summary Platform: Why is this product a big deal to the insurance and claims ecosystems?

Jonathan: Wisedocs' Summary Platform aims to revolutionize claims processing in the insurance sector. Traditional claim reviews, especially those involving detailed medical records, are time-consuming and costly. The platform uses advanced machine learning to summarize thousands of medical records quickly and efficiently. This not only accelerates decision-making but also ensures critical details are highlighted. Its user-friendly features, like the interactive timeline and keyword filtering, empower insurance professionals to extract vital clinical data efficiently. In essence, the platform streamlines and elevates the entire claims review process for insurance, legal, medical sectors and their claimants.

Which part of Wisedocs’ new Summary Platform do you know customers can’t wait to use?

Jonathan: From my interactions and understanding of our users' needs, the "Search, Filter and Sort" feature may have a huge impact. In the fast-paced insurance landscape, professionals often grapple with sifting through extensive medical records to extract critical information. This feature, powered by intelligent OCR, not only streamlines this process but ensures that no vital detail is overlooked. It works seamlessly with other features like the Timeline View and Summary Builder, enhancing the overall user experience. The ability to quickly locate and understand specific terms within medical summaries is transformative, and I believe our users will find immense value in this integration.
