Wisedocs is proud to be building a stellar team, and we are excited to introduce our inspiring team members through our monthly Wisedocs’ Brain Power series. Recently, we introduced you to Anna Pilotti, Wisedocs’ HR Generalist. Today, we’ll meet one of the creative minds behind our product offerings, Ivan Blanco, one of Wisedocs’ product managers! Ivan started in the computer science space and quickly discovered his passion for product development and understanding how technology can make people’s lives better. Today he is living that passion everyday, diving into product strategy, as well as hunting down the perfect cup of coffee and exploring the city’s hidden food gems. Ivan discusses his role at Wisedocs, how he structures his workday, and what excites him about being part of the Wisedocs Product team!

Tell us about your career so far. How did you get to where you are today?

“I started out as a developer for about 7 years after getting my Computer Science degree. At one of my previous jobs, I got to work with some amazing Product Managers and thought "wow, this is actually really cool!". When I moved to Canada, I got lucky and landed a role as a Product Owner at a software company. The rest, as they say, is history!”

How did you find Wisedocs and end up in the tech and startup world?

“I was browsing LinkedIn and noticed I had some connections working at Wisedocs. Got chatting with them about careers and opportunities and here we are! As for entering the startup space, that was thanks to a former manager of mine who convinced me to join his new venture. Once I got a taste of startup life, there was no going back. The energy is just different!”

Wisedocs growth as a startup has been extraordinary over the past year. Our organization is proud to have secured an oversubscribed Series A funding round of $12.7M and an additional $4.5M in growth capital funding. In addition to capital funding growth, Wisedocs was widely recognized within the industry with numerous awards and recognitions. Most notably, we’re proud to be recognized as one of Canada’s Best Startup Employers by Forbes and Best Workplaces for Startups 2024 by Great Place to Work Canada

Can you describe your role as a Product Manager at Wisedocs? What are your primary responsibilities and areas of focus?

“In a growing company like ours, the role of product manager is quite dynamic. I work closely with Wisedocs’ developers on technical details while also helping establish processes to support our growth. My main focus is ensuring our product genuinely makes our customers' lives easier. This involves understanding their needs, coordinating with development teams, and staying on top of industry trends. It's a mix of detailed work and bigger picture thinking.

What makes you excited about Wisedocs? What are the challenges?

“What really excites me about Wisedocs is seeing the potential impact of what we're building and having the opportunity to contribute massively to its direction." - Ivan Blanco, Wisedocs Product Manager

"Of course, we face typical growing pains of a scaling startup - what works today might need to change tomorrow, and adapting quickly can be challenging. But that's also what keeps things interesting.”

What’s your stack as a Product Manager? Share your favourite tools:

“Slack is essential for team communication. I rely on Product Discovery Board from Atlassian for road mapping and feedback tracking. Avoma helps me review customer calls effectively, and Full Story gives great insights into user behavior. I also use AI tools such as ChatGPT and Claude for documentation and research as they're really helpful for streamlining some of the more time-consuming tasks.”

What part of the Wisedocs product are you most proud to have worked on, to date?

“I'm particularly proud of our work on the Deduplication detection functionality. It's made a real difference in how efficiently our customers can process claims. I'm also excited about our current initiatives - we're working on transforming our document processing approach in ways that will significantly reduce processing time and costs while improving quality. These improvements will open up new possibilities that I believe will really benefit our customers.”

About 94% of duplicate pages occur at the point of registration, often due to data entry errors or small variations in patient details. This can lead to a costly and time-consuming manual cleanup process, with an estimated cost burden of $3.2 to $4.8 million in the U.S. Wisedocs Deduplication feature mitigates this volume and added costs by analyzing uploaded duplicate pages by leveraging our Intelligent Optical Character Recognition technology. This process can remove tens to hundreds of unnecessary pages, reducing the workload for those manually reviewing the files and significantly streamlining the claims process.

In your opinion, what are some of the key qualities or skills that make a successful product manager?

“In my view, successful product managers need a combination of vision and practicality. You've got to see the big picture while making things happen on the ground. Being data-informed helps make solid decisions, but you also need to know when to trust your instincts and user feedback.

In startup companies, it's all about being adaptable and getting things done. Plans change fast, and you need to be able to pivot while keeping your team aligned. At the end of the day, it's about turning ideas into reality and moving things forward, even if the path isn't always clear.”

At Wisedocs we’re always looking for talented and driven individuals to join our fast-scaling company. If you’re interested in making a difference in the claims industry and joining a dynamic team, apply today to one of our open roles
